As we look to the year ahead, our Genealogy Club is planning some additional programs and events which should help commemorate and celebrate several milestone events in history, as well as add to your skill set as a genealogist. For those of you keeping score at home, 2018 is proving to be quite the celebratory year. This year marks the centennial of the World War I Armistice on November 11, while Illinois marks its bicentennial on December 3. Locally, Bolingbrook’s historic Boardman Cemetery is continuing its second year of headstone restoration work. There’s a lot to look forward to this year!
All our programs are free, open to the public, and available to researchers of all experience levels.
Sunday, February 18, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Haller’s Polish Army in France
The Fountaindale Genealogy Club is pleased to be one of the host sites for the Polish Genealogical Society of America’s monthly meetings. In this program, Paul Valasek will present an in-depth program on the 23,000 fighting men of Haller’s Polish Army. This group was recruited in North America, trained by the Canadians, outfitted and served alongside the French in the Great War, and later established Poland’s eastern boarders in the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1920. A webinar option to the program is available for free for PGSA members and $10 for non-members.
Saturday June 9th and Sunday June 10, 2018 – Hands-On Boardman Cemetery Restoration Workshop
Building on the work accomplished by our attendees and volunteers last year, the Fountaindale Public Library is hosting another two-day cemetery restoration workshop. This workshop will give you the opportunity to learn how to clean, mount, restore, and repair cemetery headstones in a hands-on environment. Breakfast and lunch is provided for attendees each day. Maximum attendance is capped at 30 persons per day. Bring a friend and learn the skills you need to restore your own family’s cemetery or to assist in restoration projects at other sites. This program is made possible by the generosity of DuPage Township, and additional support by the Bolingbrook Historic Preservation Commission.
Wednesday, December 5, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. – Illinois at 200
William Pack will lead you through 200 years of Illinois history in one action packed program. From early exploration to skyscrapers and beyond, there’s a lot to celebrate! Part lecture, part trivia game, this program is guaranteed to be fun, informative, with a little dash of the odd and unusual. William is a fantastic presenter, and you won’t want to miss this program!
